The 22-mile Guanella Pass takes about two hours to drive, but, with all the attractions along the route, it can take much longer. The pass starts in historic Georgetown, which offers a glimpse into Colorado's past. Once a silver mining mecca, Georgetown has preserved many of its old buildings and converted them to museums.
Carriage rides take visitors through downtown, and, in the summer, the Georgetown Loop Railroad chugs along its old tracks. And when travelers are done sightseeing, nearby Idaho Springs provides several hot springs to soak in, old gold mine tours and fun family dining.
Heading down the pass, countless trailheads offer access to open space where vacationers can mountain bike, hike, fish and four-wheel. And, finally, visitors who reach the end of the pass are greeted by the rustic mountain towns of Bailey and Pine. Travelers exploring the towns' historic buildings and shops should keep their eyes open for the herds of bighorn sheep known to roam the area.
Bed & breakfasts and cabins along the South Platte River are great options for those too weary to move on, and visitors can grab a bite to eat at Colorado's famous Coney Island Hot Dog Stand in Bailey.
To get to Guanella Pass, take I-70 west of Denver to Exit 228 in Georgetown. Follow the signs from the Gateway Visitors Center.
